AVOID THE SECOND ARROW

Thich Nhat Hanh, The Art of Living: Peace and Freedom in the Here and Now (New York: HarperOne, 2017) ("Avoid who is hit by arrow is in a great deal of pain, but if a second arrow comes along and hits that person in the same place, the pain will be ten times worse. Your suffering is the first arrow. And the second arrow is your irritation, anger, resistance, and reaction to whatever is coming up. The second arrow could be your fear, which imagines the situation to be much worse than it is; it could be your inability to accept that you are suffering, or it could be your frustration or regrets. You have to be calm and recognize your suffering clearly, just as it is, without exaggerating or amplifying it with other worries." Id. at 178-179.)
